Up Bank Review Australia (2026): An Honest Look From People Who Actually Bank There
An honest Up Bank review for Australians in 2026 — no monthly fees, savings buckets, the catches nobody mentions, and whether it's worth switching. We're customers, not affiliates.
There are two kinds of Up Bank reviews on the internet. The first is written by someone who signed up, screenshotted the referral bonus, and called it journalism. The second is a comparison site that gets paid per click and mysteriously finds every bank equally excellent.
This is neither. We bank with Up. We also think you should know exactly where it's ordinary, because a review that only lists positives isn't a review, it's an ad.
The short version
Up is a mobile-only bank, backed by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. No monthly account fees. Savings "buckets" that are genuinely the best feature. A clean app that does instant notifications properly. And no branches, no car loans, and a savings rate that moves around like everyone else's.
For a lot of Australians — especially anyone saving toward something specific like a car — it's a solid everyday account. It's not a full-service bank replacement, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling it.
What Up actually is
Up is a digital bank brand operating under Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, which means your money sits with an established Australian bank rather than a startup with a nice app and a prayer. That matters for the obvious reason: it's covered by the Financial Claims Scheme like other banks, up to the applicable limit.
The whole experience lives in an app. There's no website banking to fall back on, no branch to walk into, and no phone number to call at 4pm on a Friday when something's gone sideways. In-app chat support is how you talk to them. For most people under 40 that's fine. For some people it's a dealbreaker, and that's a fair call.
What's genuinely good
No monthly account fees. This is rarer than it should be. Plenty of "everyday" accounts still clip you a few dollars a month for the privilege of holding your own money. Up doesn't.
The savings buckets. You split your savings into named buckets, each with its own target. This sounds like a gimmick until you use it. Money stops being a vague number and becomes "the rego bucket is nearly full" and "the car deposit bucket isn't". For anyone who's ever raided their savings because it all sat in one undifferentiated pile, it's a genuine behaviour change. Our buckets are called V8 FUND, REGO MONEY and ROUND THE WORLD TRIP, in that order of realism.
Notifications that actually work. Every transaction, instantly, with a merchant name that makes sense. Dodgy subscription you forgot about in 2023? You'll know within seconds.
Travel features. Up doesn't charge the usual international transaction rigmarole in the way many banks do, and it handles multi-currency spending sensibly. If you travel, it's a real plus. Check the current fee schedule before you book anything, because this is exactly the sort of thing that changes.
PayID and instant transfers. Works the way it should. Fast, no fuss.
The catches nobody puts in their review
The savings rate isn't a gift, it's a set of conditions. Up's savings rate, like every bank's, comes with conditions and it moves when the RBA moves or when the bank feels like it. Never pick an account based on a snapshot rate you read in a review (including this one). Check the current rate and, more importantly, the conditions attached to it — some accounts require you to grow the balance each month, others require a minimum deposit. Any bonus rate that requires you to jump through hoops has a "what if I forget one month" catch worth understanding.
No branches means no human. If your account gets locked before a house settlement, you cannot walk into a building and look someone in the eye. Some people are fine with that. Others discover they're not, at the worst possible moment.
It's a spending and savings account, not a full financial toolkit. No home loans. No car loans. No business accounts. No offset account against a mortgage. If you want a car loan, Up isn't going to give you one — you'll be dealing with a lender or a dealer, which is exactly what the rest of this site is about.
App-only is a real constraint. Lose your phone, break your phone, or hand your phone to a kid who locks you out, and account access gets more complicated than "walk into a branch". Their support handles it, but plan for the friction.
Up for car buyers specifically
Here's where it's actually useful for our patch, and it's not about car loans:
A deposit is the whole game. On a typical secured car loan, a $10,000 deposit instead of $2,000 on a $30,000 car doesn't just reduce the amount borrowed — it cuts the interest across the entire term and usually improves the rate you're offered. Buckets make that deposit visible and boring in the best way. Set a bucket called "CAR DEPOSIT", set the target at $10,000, and let it tick over instead of hoping the savings pile happens on its own.
Sinking funds stop car costs becoming debt. Rego, insurance, CTP, servicing and tyres all arrive on a schedule. Nobody is surprised by their own rego date, yet thousands of Australians put it on a credit card every year. Work out the annual cost, divide by 26, and put that amount in a bucket every fortnight. That's a $1,200 rego and insurance bill becoming $46 a fortnight.
The maths, plainly. Saving $300 a fortnight for a $10,000 deposit takes 33 fortnights — about 15 months. That's the difference between shopping with leverage and shopping with desperation, and no car finance article can fix desperation.
If you want to run what a deposit does to your actual repayments, our free car loan calculator shows you the interest cost at different deposit levels in about ten seconds.
The referral, explained honestly
Up has a referral program where the person who signs up and the person who referred them both get a bonus — advertised as up to $21 each. We use Up, so we have a referral link, and yes, we benefit if you use it.
Three things worth saying plainly:
1. The amount and the conditions are Up's call, not ours. They set the bonus, they change it when they want, and their terms and conditions decide whether you qualify. Always read the current terms before signing up — a referral bonus is not a reason to open a bank account you don't otherwise want.
2. We'd tell you not to bother if the account were rubbish. We're not getting rich off this, and the entire premise of this site is that we don't recommend things that cost you money.
3. If you already have a bank you like, don't switch. Switching banks for twenty-one dollars and a bucket feature is a bad trade if your current setup works and moving your direct debits would cause a fortnight of chaos.
If you do want to try it, here's how the Up referral works — the whole thing in plain English, including what Up requires before they'll pay the bonus.
Who Up actually suits
Suits you if: you do everything on your phone, you're saving toward something specific, you want no ongoing account fees, and you don't need branches or a mortgage offset.
Doesn't suit you if: you want a full-service bank in one place, you have business banking needs, you want your offset account and mortgage with the same institution, or you simply don't want to move your direct debits.
The honest middle: plenty of people use Up as a secondary account — salary at a big bank, savings buckets at Up. That's a perfectly reasonable setup and it's what we'd suggest if you're unsure.
Quick Answers
Is Up Bank safe?
Up operates under Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, an established Australian bank, and deposits are covered by the Financial Claims Scheme up to the applicable limit. Safe and insured aren't quite the same thing as convenient, though — read the app-only catch above.
Does Up Bank have monthly fees?
The everyday account doesn't charge a monthly account fee. Always check their current pricing for anything beyond that, since fee schedules change.
Can I get a car loan through Up?
No. Up doesn't offer car loans. If you're financing a car you'll be comparing lenders or dealer finance — which is what the rest of this site exists to help with.
Is Up good for saving for a car?
Yes, specifically because of the buckets. Naming a bucket, setting a target and watching it fill works better than a generic savings balance for most people. It doesn't earn you a better rate than shopping around, though.
What's the catch with the Up referral bonus?
The amount and eligibility are set by Up and can change, and there are usually conditions on the signup before the bonus is paid. Read their current terms rather than any review, including ours.
