I Bought a JAC T9 — Here's What Nobody Tells You After Week One
A sparky from Melbourne's west picked up a JAC T9 Haven ex-demo for $36,990 drive away. No press car, no dealer incentive — just an honest week-one verdict on Australia's best-value ute.
I didn't plan on buying a JAC T9. But when a dealer clearing out ex-demo stock drops a Haven spec with 3,000km on the clock for $36,990 drive away, you stop asking questions pretty quick. That's exactly the kind of deal Not a Wood Duck was built to find, and mate, this one was a ripsnorter.
Here's my honest week one verdict. No press car. No dealer incentive. Just a sparky from Melbourne's west who needed a ute and got lucky.
The Deal
Let's talk money first because that's why you're here. I picked up a 2024 JAC T9 Haven spec, second from the top of the range, as an ex-demo clearance from a dealer that no longer carries JAC. Before you panic, that's not the drama it sounds like. The car still has its full factory warranty and JAC's dealer network in Australia is solid enough that servicing isn't a concern.
Drive away price: $36,990 with 3,000km on the clock. A similarly specced GWM Cannon, LDV T60 or BYD Shark would've cost me considerably more.
If you're buying a new car and haven't run your numbers through a Fair Deal Checker, you're leaving money on the table. The dealer experience was genuinely ripper too. No pressure, no games, straight to the point. Exactly how it should be.
First Impressions
I'll be honest, when I first clapped eyes on it I wasn't exactly thrilled. The colour? Let's just call it bold. Dog dick red wasn't what I had in mind for a work ute, but I needed something fast and beggars can't be choosers. And you know what, it grew on me. A week later I actually reckon it looks pretty sharp on the road.
Here's what most reviews won't tell you: out of all the Chinese utes available in Australia right now, the T9 is genuinely the best looking. I've looked at the LDV, GWM and FOTON in person. The T9 wins on presence every single time.
Step inside and the value hits you immediately. It's not Euro spec and it's not Japanese refinement, but for the money the interior is bloody good. The tech, the space, the fit and finish are all well above what you'd expect at this price. The back seats are genuinely comfortable, which is more than I can say for a few pricier utes I've sat in.
The electronics. Mate. The attention sensor, overspeed warnings and tyre pressure sensors going off at the slightest excuse are absolute head doers. If you like a quiet cabin, prepare yourself.
Living With It Day To Day
The T9 is not a powerhouse. The turbo does a bit too much and it's a slug off the mark if you're expecting something punchy. But once you adjust your expectations, the driveability around Melbourne is actually pretty decent. Suburban streets, highway runs, work sites, it handles it all without complaint.
The real tell? The missus rates it. And honestly, that's half the battle right there. As a work ute it's doing everything I need. The tray is massive, genuinely bigger than my old Ranger, with plenty of room for gear.
What's genuinely shocked me is how far Chinese utes have come. A few years ago you wouldn't catch me dead in one. Now the value proposition is just a literal shocker. These things have caught up fast.
The Good Stuff ✅
- Value for money is the standout, nothing touches it at this price point
- Best looking Chinese ute on the Australian market right now
- Tray is massive, bigger than a Ranger
- Rear seats are genuinely comfortable
- Tech and spec level is well above what you'd expect
- The missus approved it, that alone deserves a tick
The Not So Good 🔧
- Bloody sensitive electronics, attention sensor, overspeed warnings and tyre pressure alerts going off constantly
- Engine isn't powerful, the turbo does a bit too much and it shows off the mark
- Interior quality is good for the price but don't go in expecting Japanese or European build quality
- Buying from a dealer that no longer stocks the brand requires a bit of faith
Week One Verdict
7.5 to 8 out of 10, and you know what, that's perfectly fine. It doesn't have to be the best ute on the market. It has to be the best ute for the money. And right now, it is.
If you want a bargain and you're not precious about badges, the JAC T9 is a 110% recommendation. If you've got more coin and can wait, keep an eye on the JAC Hunter or have a serious look at the KGM Musso EV or BYD Shark. But for what I paid and what I got, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
